Ingredients Integrity

At Bburee, we responsibly source our core ingredients - hinoki cypress water and oil - from one of South Korea's oldest hinoki cypress forests in Hadong. Home to around two hundred thousand hinoki cypress trees, the forest experiences hot, humid summers and cold, dry winters. This dramatic seasonal variation enhances the trees' resilience and boosts the potency of their phytoncides. Our ingredients are carefully extracted from naturally shed leaves and branches during pruning, ensuring no harm to the forest.

How is it made

01 Selection & Sterilization

Pruned hinoki cypress tree branches are carefully hand-sorted and then transported to our processing plant, where they are sterilized.

They are stored at approximately 60°F without any UV exposure for three months. This ripening procedure is essential to prevent the loss of beneficial compounds during extraction.

02 Low-temperature Ripening

The steam distillation method extracts essential oils from tree leaves by applying heat which causes the plant cells to release the oils. The steam and oil mixture is then condensed, separating the oil from the water. This extraction process preserves the oil’s natural properties.

03 Extraction

04 Back to nature

The extracted branches and leaves are fermented and repurposed as compost to enrich the forest soil.

Efficacy

Phytoncide 01, our eco-friendly room and linen spray, contains 80% hinoki cypress water, 10% hinoki cypress oil, and 10% purified water, offering a higher phytoncide concentration compared to competing products. Because our ingredients are 100% natural, the spray's efficacy may vary slightly depending on harvest times and weather conditions. However, through a meticulous manufacturing process, rigorous testing by accredited institutions, and ongoing research, we are committed to ensuring the highest level of efficacy in every product.

What is phytoncide?

Phytoncides are natural compounds released by plants and trees as a defense mechanism against insects and fungi, which cannot be synthetically produced. These compounds have antibacterial properties that actively break down odor-causing bacteria and mold, neutralizing smells rather than simply masking them. Additionally, phytoncides are known to stimulate the parasympathetic nervous system, helping to reduce stress and promote relaxation. Among different species, needleleaf trees contain high concentrations of phytoncides, with hinoki cypress trees particularly noted for emitting phytoncides of the highest quality.

Test Results

The odor concentration dropped significantly from 480 ppm to 5 ppm within 30 minutes of application and from 440 ppm to 5 ppm within 120 minutes of application. The deodorization rate remained consistently at 99% throughout the 120-minute testing period.

The Phyoncide 01 spray demonstrated a 99.9% bacterial reduction rate against Staphylococcus and Salmonella over the 24-hour testing period.
